The Golden Globes hinted at the potential for surprising upsets in this year’s entertainment awards season, setting the stage for an Oscars ceremony packed with unexpected twists. During a recent livestream, actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid unveiled the nominees for the 2024 Academy Awards.
While the nominations began with a surprising nod for Sterling K. Brown’s performance in “American Fiction” for Best Supporting Actor, the usual frontrunners still commanded attention. “American Fiction” earned a total of five nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, and Best Picture.
However, contenders like Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” are positioned for a strong showing. These films received multiple nominations in prestigious categories like Best Picture and Directing. The Best Actress category appears particularly competitive, with Lily Gladstone and Emma Stone emerging as potential winners.
In the Best Actor category, Cillian Murphy faces stiff competition from Jeffrey Wright, Paul Giamatti, Colman Domingo, and Bradley Cooper. The Best Supporting Actress race, once seemingly leaning towards Da’Vine Joy Randolph, now includes contenders like Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera, and Jodie Foster.
With nine nominations, including Best Picture, “Barbie” emerges as a film to watch, especially considering its nominations for Original Song. The Oscars ceremony promises inspired performances of nominated songs like “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”.
